Server Connection

The Siren 2007 client will attempt to connect to a local server the first time it is run. If your server service is on another computer then the attempt will fail and you will be prompted to enter the details of your server connection.

Connection Details

Specify the name of the computer running the server service and the port on which the server is listening for connections. The connection port must be the same on all computers in your network.

You can change connection details at any time by selecting Settings | Client Options from the client main menu.

Connection Methods

Siren 2007 supports several implementations of TCP and HTTP connections. The server will support all types of connection simultaneously but will perform better if a single connection method is chosen across your network.

  • TCP connections may be faster than HTTP, though results vary on different networks. If you have a firewall then you will have to ensure that permission is granted for the server to listen for TCP connections (on a port of your choosing).
  • HTTP may be easier to configure than TCP because it allowed by most firewalls.

Server Connection Errors

If someone turns off the server or something goes wrong with your network then all previously connected clients will show a Server Connection Error. Click Try Again to make an attempt to reconnect, Exit to close the client, or Options to view or modify details of the server connection (as shown in the previous image).

Best Practice

Use Siren 2007 to notify your users of scheduled outages in advance. You must also have procedures in place and train staff to deal with situations that occur unexpectedly. Decide whether you want staff calling support if anything goes wrong, or whether you want them to wait a minute when a connection fails then try again.
